Tokyo 1964
To the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, in 1964, the first games in Asia, 5,140 athletes from 14 new countries, mostly African nations that had gained independence, arrived and made their debut.
This brought the games to a record participation of countries – 93.
In the Israeli delegation, there were 10 Israeli athletes, half of whom were eliminated after the preliminary competitions.
The head of the delegation, Yosef Inbar, the chairman of the committee, Shalom Zisman, and the secretary of the committee, Chaim Globinski, served as representatives at the congresses alongside the games.
The athlete Gideon Ariel carried the flag of Israel at the opening ceremony.
The Israeli football referee Menachem Ashkenazi brought honor to Israel when he officiated the final of the football tournament.
