Seoul 1988

The Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea in 1988 featured 6,976 male athletes and 2,430 female athletes from 159 countries.

Only 9 countries responded to Cuba’s call to boycott the games.

Israel was represented by a relatively small delegation of 19 athletes who competed in 8 sports.

For the first time in its history, Israel was on the verge of winning an Olympic medal, but due to Yom Kippur, on which the second of the seven races in the sailing competition was held, the two Israeli sailors in the Flying Dutchman class, Yoel Sela and Eldad Amir, had to settle for fourth place.

Unlike Amir and Sela, brothers Dan and Ran Turtan violated the decision of the Israeli Olympic Committee not to compete on Yom Kippur and went into the water.

The heads of the delegation decided to expel them from the games and send them home.
