For the second consecutive year, a special seminar was held at the Munich House in Tel Aviv, focusing on the impact of the Munich massacre of the 11 Israeli athletes on the identity of today’s athletes.
The day opened with a wreath-laying ceremony attended by the Representative of the Bavarian State Government in Israel, Steven Schmartz; representatives of the Israel Olympic Committee, including Chairperson Yael Arad, Uri Afek and Moti Ambaram; and athletes from the Wingate Academy for Excellence in Sport.
A cross-generational panel followed, moderated by Yarden Har-Lev, featuring Ankie Spitzer, widow of the late André Spitzer; Yehuda Weinstein, an Olympic fencer and member of the Israeli delegation to the 1972 Munich Games; and Olympic fencer Yuval Freilich.
The seminar concluded with roundtable discussions involving athletes from the Wingate Academy, focusing on the meaning of remembrance and the impact of the Munich events on national and sporting identity, both then and today.
