Moscow 1980

The Olympic Games in Moscow, in 1980 – The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 led to the boycott of the games by the American administration.

The pressure exerted by the Americans on their allies, including Israel, led to a boycott of the games by most Western countries, except for Britain and Australia, who preferred to leave the option for athletes to compete under the Olympic flag.

The Israeli delegation also missed the games due to the compliance of then-Prime Minister Menachem Begin and the Israeli Olympic Committee with the request of the American president.
