Montreal 1976
The Olympic Games in Montreal, Canada, in 1976 saw a respectable Israeli delegation of 28 athletes among a total of 4,834 athletes and 1,261 female athletes from 92 countries.
Competitions in 21 sports were held at the games. The Israelis competed in nine disciplines: athletics, weightlifting, wrestling, swimming, shooting, gymnastics, judo, fencing, and sailing.
Esther Roth-Shahamorov, the only one who also participated in the Munich 1972 Games, carried the Israeli flag adorned with 11 black ribbons, and became the first Israeli athlete to reach an Olympic final.
Esther’s achievement, finishing sixth in the 100-meter hurdles final, topped the list of additional accomplishments achieved at the games that year: weightlifter Edward Weitz, who finished fifth, wrestler Rami Maron, who finished seventh in freestyle in the under 68 kg category, and the Israeli football team, which advanced to the quarterfinals.
