Los Angeles 1984

For the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, USA, in 1984, 5,458 male athletes and 1,620 female athletes from 140 countries participated in a spectacular opening ceremony, from which the delegation from the Soviet Union and 19 Eastern Bloc countries were absent.

At the opening ceremony, a large Israeli delegation marched, consisting of 33 athletes who competed in 11 different sports.

The grand production in Los Angeles, which hosted “star” athletes like basketball player Michael Jordan and American diver Greg Louganis, along with the handsome profits at the end of the games, indicated the beginning of a new era in the history of the games.

Among the Israelis, notable achievements were shared by the kayaker Aviram Mizrahi, the gymnast Nancy Goldschmidt, and the marksman Yitzhak Yonasi.
