Lillehammer 1994

The Winter Olympics began at the foot of Mont Blanc in 1924 in France and have been held every four years since, like the Summer Games.

In 1994, Israel participates for the first time in the 17th Winter Games, held that year in the city of Lillehammer, Norway.

The games are declared as the ‘Green-White Games’ as a sign of the importance the Olympic Committee places on the environment.

Israel joins for the first time that year with 66 other countries participating in the Winter Olympic Games, with a modest representation of just one Israeli athlete in figure skating – Michael Shmerkin (Men).
