Today marks two years to go until the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games

The Los Angeles 2028 Organising Committee (LA28) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have revealed an ambitious and unprecedented operational plan for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, exactly two years before the Games begin.

With exactly two years to go until the Opening Ceremony on 14 July 2028, the organisers presented a full overview of the Games.

LA28 is being funded entirely through private sources, including sponsorships, ticket sales, and broadcasting rights. To keep the budget balanced and save more than $150 million, the organisers adopted a strict sustainability strategy: no permanent new sports venues will be built.

The competitions will take place at 49 existing or temporary venues, leading to several unique logistical decisions.

Sports moved outside California: Softball and canoe slalom competitions will be held in Oklahoma City, more than 2,000 kilometres from Los Angeles. This decision allows the organisers to use world-class existing venues and avoid unnecessary construction.

Famous Los Angeles venues with new roles: Dodger Stadium will host the baseball tournament. Crypto.com Arena, home of the Lakers, will be transformed into the venue for artistic gymnastics. The Intuit Dome, the Clippers’ new arena in Inglewood, will host the basketball competitions.

The Olympic Village: No new residential neighbourhoods will be built. Instead, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) campus will be converted into the official Olympic Village, accommodating around 15,000 athletes, officials, and team staff.

A giant swimming venue inside an NFL stadium: In one of the biggest logistical challenges in Olympic history, SoFi Stadium, currently home to NFL games, will be transformed into a swimming venue with around 46,000 seats.

This decision has also led to a historic change in the traditional Olympic schedule and created a race against time. Athletics will take place during the first week of the Games at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Immediately after the Opening Ceremony at SoFi Stadium, organisers will have only five days to build a temporary Olympic swimming pool, install all water systems, and complete the venue so that swimming competitions can begin in the second week.

The Games will feature a record 36 sports (51 disciplines) and 351 medal events, bringing together around 11,200 athletes from more than 200 countries.

For the first time in Olympic history, the athlete quota will include a clear female majority: 5,655 women and 5,543 men.
