History in Motion for the Olympic Movement: The IOC Embarks on a New Path
At the 146th Session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Lausanne, several significant initiatives were approved as part of the Fit For The Future program, led by IOC President Kirsty Coventry.
๐น A new Olympic Foundation has been established, which will provide every Olympic athlete with a grant of $10,000 following their participation in the Olympic Games, beginning with the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.
๐น A new framework was approved for evaluating sports seeking inclusion in the Olympic programme. The process will now focus on sporting disciplines and objective criteria such as global reach, public interest, quality of governance, and adherence to Olympic values.
๐น A new model for selecting host cities was approved, which will shape the bidding and selection processes for the 2036 and 2040 Olympic Games, while increasing the involvement of IOC members in the decision-making process.
๐น In addition, the principle of neutrality in sport was reaffirmed, emphasizing the separation of athletes and the Olympic Movement from political disputes and involvement.
The decisions adopted mark a clear direction for the future of the Olympic Movementโgreater support for athletes, increased transparency in decision-making processes, and a continued commitment to the values on which Olympic sport is built.
